Hang on, hang on, let's not mix apples and oranges here.
This is a terribly superficial thing to say, but you can't compare the looks of Arvind Swamy and R. Madhavan, no way. I'm sure Arvind Swamy would even agree.
Now, as for the weight issue. In Priyasakhi, Madhavan's face was definitely fuller, but his body didn't show any signs of having put on weight. I'd chalk it up to the fact that he's just getting older and his face is filling out. In fact, in Priyasakhi, as bad a film as it was, Madhavan looked absolutely edible, especially those chubby cheeks (framed beautifully by the longer hair, which he was still sporting for the premiere of Ramji Londonwaley).
Besides, it's one thing to be pretty and put on weight. If you have a pretty face, it's still pretty even after some avoirdupois, and you can always lose the weight. If you're countenance is less than pleasing aesthetically and you put on weight, well, even losing it isn't going to change that.
